World Environment Day is an annual event celebrated on June 5th to raise awareness about environmental issues and encourage positive means to protect the planet. One of the prominent themes in recent years has been “Beat the Plastic,” which focuses on reducing plastic pollution and promoting sustainable practices. The theme undertaken by the Community Service Club and UBA of Asian School of Business was “If you can’t refuse it, recycle it, reuse it”.
Plastic pollution poses a significant threat to the environment and human health. It is estimated that around 8 million metric tons of plastic enter our oceans every year, causing harm to marine life, ecosystems, and ultimately, our own well-being.
The awareness drive was conducted with the students on reducing single use plastic, recycle and dispose of plastic, sustainable packaging. The students were motivated to participate in cleanliness drive within the campus premises. Also, the adopted villages were introduced with the harmful impact of plastic waste that is being generated in each one’s home. The faculties also took part in the drive enthusiastically, hence making the event more impactful for the upcoming generation.
The tie up with a prominent NGO will ensure that a collection drive is carried out every month, so as to collect the plastic waste that gets generated in the campus and also in the adopted village, hence making our campus and our surroundings plastic free in future.
It is the need of the hour that we embrace various sustainable alternatives to plastic products in our daily lives. For example, use cloth shopping bags, stainless steel or glass containers for food storage, and natural fiber clothing.
Beating plastic requires collective action. By making conscious choices and adopting sustainable habits, we can contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment for ourselves and future generations.
