How to Build a LinkedIn Profile That Gets You Noticed

In today’s digitally connected business environment, a strong LinkedIn profile is no longer optional, it’s essential. As a faculty member at the Asian School of Business, I often observe that students underestimate the power of cultivating a professional online presence during their academic journey. Yet, for many recruiters, mentors, and industry leaders, your LinkedIn profile serves as the first impression. It’s your digital résumé, your personal elevator pitch, and your silent spokesperson long before you ever step into the interview room.

The journey toward creating a standout profile begins with a professional headshot. Choose a well-lit photo with a neutral background and a confident, approachable expression. Avoid casual selfies or group pictures, this is your professional identity. Equally important is your headline. Move beyond the generic “BBA Student” and personalize it to reflect your goals and interests. For instance, a headline like “BBA Student | Passionate About Digital Marketing & Brand Strategy | Aspiring Marketing Analyst” immediately communicates direction and ambition.

Your ‘About’ section is another critical element as this is your story. In just a few lines, describe what you’re studying, the skills you’re developing, and what excites you most about your field. Be authentic, this section is about showing your personality, not reciting technical jargon. Follow this with a comprehensive education section, where you can showcase key coursework, live projects, certifications, and co-curricular engagements. At ASB, our students are exposed to a dynamic mix of real-world activities from business simulations to campus marketing campaigns which deserve to be highlighted here.

Don’t overlook the importance of adding skills and requesting endorsements. Include both technical and soft skills such as digital marketing, communication, data analysis, and leadership. Reach out to peers, faculty, or internship supervisors to endorse your skills, it adds credibility and weight to your profile. If you’ve worked on branding assignments, handled social media pages, coordinated events, or published content then upload these as work samples in the ‘Featured’ section. Recruiters value visible proof of your potential.

Networking is another pillar of LinkedIn. Begin by connecting with your classmates, professors, ASB alumni, and guest speakers from seminars or workshops. Always personalize your connection request as it reflects thoughtfulness and professionalism. Most importantly, don’t just build your profile, engage with it. Share your internship learnings, reflect on events you attend, or comment on industry trends. Consistent, meaningful activity boosts visibility and positions you as a curious, industry-aware student.

At Asian School of Business, we strive to nurture industry-ready professionals. Building a robust LinkedIn presence during your student years lays the foundation for your future career. Think of it not as a digital checkbox, but as a reflection of your journey, your passion, and your evolving professional identity. Let your LinkedIn profile speak confidently on your behalf, and ahead of your time.
