Sunil Kumar is the President of the exchanage4media Group. Prior to this, he was a consultant to several media companies in the areas of business strategy, content, marketing and human resources. He has been the pioneer of commercial radio in India. His understanding of the medium and his vision and initiatives over the last 18 years have contributed significantly to the creation of this new industry in India. His efforts have included counsel to the government, nurturing talents and advice to investors and station managements.
Sunil Kumar spent the first eight years of his career in advertising working for agencies like Ogilvy & Mather and Ulka (now Draft FCB-Ulka). He left advertising to run his own FM services licensed by the state owned All India Radio from 1993 to 1999. This marked the comeback of the medium of radio that had lost ground to cable & satellite television. In 1999, he joined MC Media Limited, a joint venture of Radio Mid-Day, Mumbai and Capital Radio, Londonto set up one of the first private stations in New Delhi, after interning in Station Management at SouthernFM, Brighton. In 2001, he was appointed the Head of Radio Operations and later the Business Head of the news channel at Zee Telefilms, one of India’s largest media conglomerates.
Mr. Sunil also ran a radio consultancy firm, Big River Radio, which he founded in 2002. It helped media and non-media companies set up and manage radio stations and other related business. Its client list included the BBC World Service, Radio Indigo (Bangalore), Chennai Live (Chennai), MyFM (17 stations), Nine FM (Sliguri, Gangtok) and Radio Rangeela (Raipur). He is credited for the creation of radio business models and unique programming formats that are relevant to the diverse Indian markets.
