Model United Nations (MUN) is one of the most convenient and popular programs to know and learn about the functioning of the United Nations. Throughout the globe, thousands of educational institutes, both at school and college level, organize a number of conferences wherein students engage in debates which resemble the way it takes place at the United Nations. However, as it was observed, due to lack of knowledge of the roles played by UN diplomats, these events did not reflect the actual decision making process at the United Nations.
In order to overcome this gap, the Department of Global Communication at UN (UNDGC) conducted three Global Model UN (GMUN) conferences in Geneva (2009), Kuala Lumpur (2010) and Incheon (2011) to give the best possible idea of how the United Nations works. After finding impetus from the success of these events, the UNDGC Outreach Division recognized that its role in supporting Model UN needed to evolve and decided to focus its efforts on organizing workshops and training sessions for student leaders and MUN advisors who organize MUN conferences around the world instead.
Asian School of Business, duly recognizing the significance of the same, too conducts the MUN on an annual basis. The students who participate in it get a nearly firsthand experience about the functioning of the United Nations. This year ASB’s Gnosis club is going to organise the 4th edition of MUN on 23rd Oct. 2024. The three committees UNHRC, UNCSW and UNODC will deliberate upon the agendas of Racism & Related Forms of Intolerance, Security of Women Amid Middle East Crisis and Impact of Legalizations of Drugs, respectively.
